What’s On MCR: December

So there is obviously one big event happening this December – Christmas 2022! However, before that great day, there are art events for you to attend! Here’s our list of what’s on in Greater Manchester this month.

West Art Collective X Union Sound System: Mystify 2.0

Here’s the full Lineup for West Art Collective’s most interactive event ever.

You can expect to find a large art exhibition curated by West Art Collective across four gallery rooms, DJs & sound system by Union Sound System, live bands, interactive arts including a 5-hour long deranged puppet show, UV wall painting station, and a pirate ship!

There will also be a tattoo shop, tarot card reading, badge-making workshop, and tooth gems available. You will be able to find 12 small businesses ready to share their pieces, an artwork raffle, and much more!

Traces by Paulette Bansal – 45 Hilton Street

Breaking the rule a little as this launched in November… but here is a solo exhibition by artist, printmaker Paulette Bansal. She will be showing new work that she has been working on for the past 12 months, ‘which is about the inherited objects left behind from my late father’. She will be invigilating the exhibition and is very open to talking to people about the work and welcoming any feedback as this is an ongoing project and Paulette has a lot of material to work with.

Rogue Winter Fayre – Rogue Artist Studios

Head to the ‘Rogue Winter Fayre’ where you can see and by the work of more than 85 contemporary artists. ‘Rogue artists work across media including drawing, painting, printmaking, sculpture, collage, glass, textiles, film, photography, sound art, performance and assemblage, and will be on hand over the weekend to welcome visitors to our magnificent Grade 2 listed buildings.’ Free entry and parking. Refreshments will be served.

Gee Vaucher: Beyond Punk, Feminism and the Avant-Garde – Whitwork Art Gallery

“As one of the people who defined punk’s protest art in the 1970s and 1980s, Gee Vaucher (b. 1945) deserves to be much better-known.” The launch of her new book delves into her ways of connecting avant-garde art movements with punk and contemporary street art, offering a “unique take on the history of feminist art.”

Gee Vaucher will be holding a talk during the event, with a Q&A session following.

Copies of the book will be available to purchase at the Whitworth shop.

Lightwaves 2022 – Salford Quays

This years Lightwave festival will take place Thursday 1st to Sunday 4th December, running from 4pm – 10pm each evening. Don’t miss out on these beautiful light protections from both local and national artists and see how they “transform the waterside environment.”

Christmas Card Lino Cut Workshop – Bold, Bauhaus

Now onto our events this month. First we have our Christmas Card Lino Cut Making Workshop. In this workshop hosted by artist Rachel Evans, you’ll be taught the history of lino printmaking as well as a variety of valuable skills. These include overprinting, reverse printing, and hand burnishing, which you’ll use to make your own lino printed Christmas cards to send to your loved ones! With all materials included, you’ve got nothing to lose!

Jewellery Making Workshop – Whitworth Locke

We have partnered with Whitworth Locke for their ‘Christmas with a Conscience’ series and are hosting a selection of Christmas craft workshops! In this jewellery making workshop, you will have the choice to create two glass beaded bracelets or necklaces! Each item will then be adorned with a silver stamped disk of your choice. You will learn techniques with using pliers, jump rings and crimp beads. Also, how to stamp silver using workshop tools and the finishing and polishing techniques on silver too! Perfect as a gift for someone this Christmas, or for a treat for yourself!

Wreath Making Workshop – Whitworth Locke

Make vibrant festive wreaths to hang on your doors and to get in the festive spirit. You will receive a metal wreath ring, green twine, florist wire, artificial moss, ribbons, dried oranges, cinnamon sticks,  artificial ivy, beads and more to create their own design. We will also provide stick on hooks, so they can hang this from any surface.

Bauble Making Workshop – Whitworth Locke

Come to our Bauble Making workshop where you will learn how to pour paints into glass baubles to create a marble effect. You can then decorate your creation with gold leaf paint to write or draw a design on the outside of the bauble, perhaps personalise these with a name or a Christmas pattern. We will also provide ribbons to tie these, ready to hang. The price includes two baubles per person.
