Top Exhibitions and Events: September

September is a special month in the Cotton On MCR household, because it’s my BIRTHDAY! I expected to be showered in arty gifts by all you fans – thanks!

It is also another month of gallery re-openings and new exhibitions, both IRL and online. So here are a few of our top listed events here is Greater Manchester.

Form: Saul Hay Gallery

Saul Hay Gallery opened its doors a few weeks back, and we chatted to Ian, one of the owners about what to expect with their reopening. ‘Form’ is their first ever show dedicated solely to sculpture work by artists working in the UK today. There will be a huge variety of work from an amazing list of artists, including Tony Bentley, Halima Cassell, David Cemmick, Jamie Frost and Mark Gibbs to name a few. Exhibition opens 5th September.

In Fashion

Spend time with one of Manchester Art Gallery’s tour guides exploring fashion past and present from the galley’s extensive collection. While MAG can’t gather people together physically for tours at this time, their amazing team of volunteers will be delivering online sessions twice a month using Zoom. Be sure to catch this MAG Unlocked tour on 12th and 26th September.

Other Transmissions: Whitworth Art Gallery

Other Transmissions

Good news! ‘Other Transmissions: Conversations with Outsider Art’ at The Whitworth which has been temporarily closed due to COVID-19, is due to reopen to the public in September. This exhibition brings together the work of six artists – Joe Beedles, James Desser, Amy Ellison, Frances Heap, Andrew Johnstone and John Powell-Jones. During the year-long residency they undertook, led by Venture Arts, a group of learning disabled, and non-learning disabled artists came together, on equal terms, to explore the themes of ‘Outsider Art’: labelling, categorisation and art world power dynamics.

If you haven’t yet read our interview with Katherine Long from Venture Arts find it on our website here: Manc of the Month: Katherine Long

Soft Bodies

We’re super excited to announce that this month Castlefield Gallery will be reopening to the public. That’s right, from 16th September you’ll be able to actually go and visit some art IRL and we cannot wait! They’ll be open Wednesday-Sunday 12pm-5pm so be sure to head down and take a look at their reopening exhibition ‘Soft Bodies’.

The exhibition takes its title from Soft-body dynamics, a field of computer-generated graphics that creates simulations of soft materials such as muscle, fat, hair, vegetation, and fabric. The increasing availability of this kind of software has given artists new tools to make work; manipulating ‘digital clay’ in limitless space.

Property of Neutral: Paper Gallery

Property of Neutral

Another gallery re-opening this month is Paper Gallery, part of the Mirabel Studios which also include PS Mirabel and Soft Spot. ‘Property of Neutral’ is Paper’s first IRL exhibition since the gallery closed in March due to COVID-19 and is also the first solo exhibition by artist Ruofan Chen. Ruofan creates a variety of drawings which emphasise ‘the importance of human emotions in a rapid developing and orderly society.’ The gallery will be open Saturdays 11am – 5pm and the exhibition launches 12th Sept.

We are very much excited to get back out there visiting galleries! Make sure you check each gallery’s website for opening ours and read their Covid19 policy. And watch this space, as more exhibitions open, we will get back to writing reviews! If you fancy writing as a guest blogger, have a look at our Get Involved page and get in touch.
