Top 5 Art Exhibitions and Events this January

A run-through of our top Art Exhibitions and Events in Manchester this month

Happy New Year! Sorry I’m a little late with this one, however, can you believe we are into a brand new decade? Welcome to 2020! Now if you want a bit of a detox and to lose those extra pounds gained with all the Christmas food babies, we recommend walking around art galleries! Hahah!

Read on below to check out our featured favourites, but make sure you head over to the What’s On Calendar to see what else is happening in the amazing city of Manchester!

Manchester Open Exhibition 2020

‘Manchester Open Exhibition’ at Home mcr

We are pretty excited about this one in the Cotton On MCR office! This January HOME gallery will be filled over 500 works from Greater Manchester residents! They’ll be a mix of paintings, prints, photography, sculpture, digital and mixed media, video and audio, spoken word, performance and more! All from the incredible people of this region, ‘This is the first region-wide exhibition of its type’ and we hope it’s not the last!

Free Entry. Saturday 18th January – Sunday 29th March.

Our Plastic Ocean

‘Our Plastic Ocean’ at Watersides Art Centre

Head to the Waterside Art Centre in Sale to see this amazing, and very revelant, photography exhibition by Mandy Barker. Her work explores the current global crisis of marine plastic pollution. These pieces truly capture the horrific state of our planet, yet the images are fascinating and beautiful all the same. This is definitely one to go and see!

Free Entry. Friday 10th January – Saturday 7th March.

Thumbs Up

‘Thumbs Up’ at Castlefield Gallery

I love it when the gallery space/layout is used as part of an exhibition, where the curators and artists bring you something different than paintings on a white wall. Well it sound like ‘Thumbs Up’ is going to do just that. ‘The exhibition considers how different modes of display in a contemporary art gallery condition the way audiences interact with the work. Responding to the physical spaces of the gallery the artists have developed the scale, materials, and methods of their work.’ I’m in!

Free Entry. Friday 24th January – Sunday 8th March

Talking Sense

‘Talking Sense: The changing vocabulary of mind and brain’ at The Portico Library

‘Fifty artists. Fifty minds. Fifty artworks in paint, film, sculpture and print.’

That alone makes this exhibition sound exciting. Plus, I am a big fan of art and language/literature combined – hence why I love writing about art so much! This exhibition explores the use of language in ‘Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders’ – first published in 1952. ‘By reorganising this language and juxtaposing it with eclectic artworks we hope to open up a space for helpful conversations around the future of care.’

Free Entry. Friday 17th January – Monday 13th April.

Joan Charnley Prize

‘Joan Charnley Prize’ at The Weavers Factory

Can I just say how I love the fact that The Weavers Factory emailed me with their full 2020 exhibition schedule! Thank you guys! This literally makes me so happy. And with that, their first exhibition of 2020 is the Joan Charnley Prize. The award of the exhibition goes to three textile graduates from Manchester School of Art – Hannah Sheldon, Warren Reilly and Megan Ditchfield. The award is a great link between the factory and the Uni as ‘Our [The Weavers Factory] patron Joan Charnley studied Textile Design at Manchester School of Art between 1948 and 1953.’

Free. Friday, 24 January – Sunday, 2 February.

If you have an event coming up – submit the details here.
