Art Theory and Practice Workshop: Oil Paint – 25/09/21
Get to know oil paint in theory and practice, explore its uses throughout the centuries, and try out different techniques for yourself!
In this workshop hosted by art historian Sara Riccardi and artist Alice Copley, you’ll get the best of both worlds of art theory and practice, with particular focus on oil paint as a medium.
This workshop will begin with a brief introduction to oil paint as a medium and its history within Western painting. Why has oil paint been so popular in modern Western painting? Is it true that it was “invented” in the early Renaissance? What are its characteristics, and how can paintings from the past inspire ways of playing with the medium today? You will be shown a variety of historical and contemporary oil paintings that are on display in Gallery Oldham. Artist Alice Copley will then do a live demonstration using oil paint, where you’ll learn all about various oil painting techniques. This workshop is open to all abilities and we can’t wait to see you there. With these skills you will have a go at oil painting yourself, with complete creative freedom which can be relative to the historical context given or not.
This workshop is such a valuable opportunity to learn about the art world in two very valuable ways – as a maker and a historian. You’ll learn a new skill as well as the rich history of oil painting – this isn’t a workshop you’ll want to miss!
Refreshments such as tea and coffee will also be provided in this workshop.
