Group Exhibition: 'Thumbs Up' at Castlefield Gallery

Castlefield Gallery and Venture Arts present Thumbs Up, a group exhibition that will share work by artists Michael Beard, Frances Disley, Harry Meadley, and Leslie Thompson. The four artists have brought their unique perspectives to consider how different modes of display in a contemporary art gallery condition the way audiences encounter and interact with the work. By engaging directly with the physicality of the space the artists have been stimulated to develop the experimental ambition of their practice by challenging the scale, materiality, and methods of creative production in their work.

exhibition: 'Upside Down Bucket '- ps mirabel

Upside Down Bucket is a collection of paintings by final year students and alumni from Manchester School of Art, plus special guests. The title of the exhibition epitomises the aforementioned fail turned good principle. It suggests a failed object – how can a bucket be used as a bucket when it’s upside down? – and a successful object which has accepted its deficiency and rendered new uses – now the bucket could be something to stand on, put things on or put on your head like a hat.

These paintings are imbued with similar paradoxical metaphors, opened up by a metamodern discourse to the extent that humour is regarded, by these artists, as a vital element of painting today.

Exhibition: Jack Thomas at GK Gallery and Tea Room

Jack's work is concerned with the innovation and questioning of contemporary textiles. The work is an exploration of geometry and how it can be translated into forms that can articulate and move. 3D print is a process used here to build up these textile structures layer by layer. The results are repeat patterns which are not just the decoration on the surface but form the surfaces themselves.

The surface area of the forms shifts depending on the height, breadth and density of the pattern. With the change in these factors comes change in the behaviour of the textiles. Some are easy to bend whilst others prefer to be stretched or twisted. Manipulating each form in the hands gives a visceral reaction of sound and tessellation pattern, influenced by the user’s touch.

Exhibition: 'Bus2Move' by artist Simeon Barclay at The Turnpike, Leigh

In his first institutional solo exhibition in the North West, Simeon Barclay presents a new body of work informed by research into dance. From the visual spectacle of contemporary dance theatre to the communal experience of the nigh club dance floor, the exhibition Bus2move combines costume, film and video, photography, lighting and sound.

Barclay's interest in dance and its many facets centres on the construction of masculinity, with particular focus on the way popular perceptions and stereotypes become defined, contested and encoded upon the male body.
