Other Transmissions

exhibition: 'oTHER transmissions: conversations with outsider art. Venture arts and whitworth.

Other Transmissions is a partnership project with Venture Arts. Venture Arts is a Manchester based visual arts organisation that works to build the work and careers of learning-disabled artists.

The artists have explored how the category of ‘Outsider Art’ can be seen, in their words, as either ‘isolating’ or ‘liberating,’ or perhaps both.  The artists spent three months in a shared studio space at Venture Arts producing collaborative work. The diverse pieces they have produced span sound, film, live art, digital artwork, drawings and sculpture, as well as costume.

Exhibition dates: 14th February - 14th June 2020

Times: 10am - 5pm

Note: 10am - 9pm on Thursdays and 11am - 5pm on Sundays

exhibition: 'Rock Against Racism' - gallery oldham

Syd Shelton’s photographs capture one of the most intriguing periods in British post-war history. Between 1976 and 1981, the movement Rock Against Racism (RAR) confronted racist ideology in the streets, parks and town halls of Britain. RAR was formed by a collective of musicians and political activists to fight racism and fascism through music. Under the slogan ‘Love Music, Hate Racism’, it showcased reggae and punk bands on the same stage, attracting large multicultural audiences. Shelton photographed performers such as The Clash, Elvis Costello, The Au Pairs, The Specials and protests such as the Anti National Front Demonstration in Lewisham in 1977.
This exhibition revisits the energy of RAR and the creative alliances that were formed. Shelton’s photographs remind us that Rock Against Racism was a particular treatise on belonging in Britain.

EXHIBITION: 'video stills' BY SUSANNA DOUGLAS at paper gallery

Susannah Douglas makes small drawings in pencil and ink working from amateur photographs and videos sourced from the Internet. The works depict generic or well-known content and reproduces them, cropping, repeating and mirroring them to create an overwhelming response.
For her solo exhibition at PAPER, Douglas has focused upon images of a figure dressed up as 3D representations of fictional 2D characters. These stills are sourced from holiday videos uploaded to YouTube. Each time another picture of Mickey Mouse is uploaded to the Internet the person portrayed starts to disappear while another image of Mickey Mouse comes into existence.

exhibition: 'the pothole' by Anna reading at bury art museum and sculpture centre

Anna's work combines layers of surplus commodity materials, including shredded foam, gravel, oyster shells, bitumen, chip forks and cardboard. Creating a highly tactile and fragmented environment. Her sculptures appear familiar and puzzling at once, existing between life form and architecture, ancient and futuristic and decay and regeneration.
