Where to find Art and Alcohol

Art and Alcohol – two of my favourite things!

Some of the major art galleries, on launch night, offer wine and nibbles. That’s very nice indeed. However, that’s on one night only. Sometimes you can’t beat a nice, cold, crafty one whilst you peruse the artwork. So we got to thinking, where can we drink and enjoy art?

Plus- as Manchester is facing this amazing heatwave, we don’t want to be in a stuffy art gallery with no windows! We want a beer garden god damn it!

Here is a list of some the awesome places in Greater Manchester where you can combine the two – art and alcohol. And if you know off any other places, add a comment and we’ll add it to the list!

Common Bar – Northern Quarter

‘Bar, food house, caffeine. Brunch gains, choice booze etc. Fire it up!’

We love Common. Decent beers, decent venue, decent atmosphere. Common Bar hosts loads of events, including markets and workshops. They also host art exhibitions too so we’re happy! Currently on is an exhibition named ‘Zig Zag’ by artist Atelier Bebop – till October.

Monday – Sunday: 10am–late –aplacecalledcommon.co.uk/

Electrik – Chorlton

‘Electrik is an independent cafébar nestled in suburban Chorlton.’

Electrik have an impressive selection of craft beers and ales on draught. Team that with a secluded, secret beer garden, as well as a terrace out the front, it’s a pretty decent place to be. Plus, May see’s the launch of ‘Medicine is Magic’ by collage artist Solar.

Opening times 12pm Sunday – Friday. 10am Saturday. –electrikbar.co.uk

Albatross and Arnold at The Range

‘Restaurant and bar overlooking spinningfields. Take a pew, or pull up a chair, and enjoy the very best food and drink.’

You know it’s going to be swanky as soon as you hear the words ‘Spinningfields’ and Albatross and Arnold is no exception. The restaurant is ‘the perfect space for a relaxed dining experience.’ New exhibition hosted be Comme Ca Art is on from 10th April to 18th June! ‘Fore’ features artists including Stef Trow, Adrian Pritchard, Christopher Rainham and Robert Walker.

Monday – Saturday. 12pm – 3pm lunch/5pm – 11pm dinner – albatrossandarnold.uk.com

The Talleyrand – Levenshulme

‘Bar / Gigs / Performance / Art’

The Talleyrand describe themselves as an ‘Independent venue and bar mixing traditional boozer with European beer-café live music – world beer – craft beer – live theatre – film screenings – art exhibitions.’ Need I say more?

They regularly host exhibitions and this July (5th – 11th) you can see ‘Wilderness Years: an exhibition by John Haughey.’ He is a local artist ‘whose technique is an unfeasibly complex system of coding, cutting up, drawing and re-assembling to create huge portraits from hundreds of tiny, individually rendered tiles.’ Sounds pretty good!

Closed Tues – other days time vary- https://www.instagram.com/talleyrandmcr/

All The Shapes – Prestwich

‘Bar. Cafe. Gathering Place’

Opened in 2015, All the Shapes invites you to a relaxing place to hangout and chill, whilst you enjoy food, wine, coffee and craft beer! They say ‘our repertoire expands beyond this to curate a rolling arts programme…’ They recently held ‘IN ONE ROOM‘, a group exhibition of art prints by 10 different artists.

Monday – Sunday: 10am–late –alltheshapes.co.uk/

The Creameries – Chorlton

‘Bakery. Bar. Restaurant.’

The Creameries is a place for everyone – whether you are meeting friends, having a meal with family, looking for somewhere to relax and work and there’s a dedicated children’s area too, which also hold craft workshops. ‘Pictures in need of a Soundtrack’ was a recent exhibition held there by photographer Not Quite Light.

Open from 9am daily thecreameries.co.uk/

Leaf – City Centre

‘Championing Loose LEAF tea’

Don’t be deceived by the name. Yes Leaf do offer a lot of lovely tea’s, but they also serve alcohol, and stay open late when hosting events! Leaf is one of my favourite places to go for a lovely lunch, it’s decorated with amazing wallpaper and fairy lights! They have a downstairs area which hosts workshops and exhibitions, including the Charity Art Fair, The Get Together, and Craft Manchester.

Sunday – Tuesday 9am – 6pm / Wednesday – Saturday 9am – 8pm. –thisisleaf.co.uk/

The Pilcrow Pub – Noma

‘We are a contemporary pub situated at Sadlers Yard, Manchester.’

It ain’t always easy to find a good pub in the city centre, it’s even harder to find a decent one with a beer garden and open space! Say hello to Pilcrow Pub! They have a fantastic mix of modern & seasonal beers, plus sandwiches, pastries, and baked goods. All this, and they host regular exhibitions and events, including recent exhibition by illustrator Adam Menzie, and jewellery workshop with Alijah Hussain.

Open from 12pm dailythepilcrowpub.com

Soup Kitchen – Northern Quarter

‘Food, drink, live music and night club.’

Soup Kitchen is an awesome venue right in the heart of Northern Quarter’s St Stevenson Square. This place has won awards for Best Newcomer and Best Night club in Manchester! It’s a canteen, a bar, a music venue and a exhibition space! During April/May/June you can see the works of Pomona Studio.

Open from 12pm daily – soupkitchenmcr.co.uk
